I've just posted an article up on the blog about the pricing of the Ultimate edition - which is the only version to contain all 3 games.

£110 is just mental imo. Flies in the face of Activision's experience over the last few months where the traditional core has stayed away in droves when it comes to large outlays of this kind.

I don't see the problem myself, the VG247 comments thread is whipping itself into its usual frothing frenzy. If all that stuff in the box (and the box itself) isn't worth £110 to you, don't buy it and just get the game for whatever you think is reasonable. Simple innit?

The whole point of special editions is that they offer some pretty tasty extras and I've got to say as these things go that's a nice collection of extras. Nicer than a box in cardboard sleeve or some of the other tat that passes for special editions these days.

But that's the problem, people won't buy it, surely? Given that the already established value of the updated Ps2 games plus the expected price of any new game ( even GoW III ) adds up to just over half of the price of the "ultimate" edition - that's a very expensive plastic box.

My problem isn't so much what we're asked to pay for a game now - I understand all the arguments about recouping costs etc. It's more that I simply can't understand how a piece of plastic - a toy guitar, a box - can be sold for so much. I'm probably just getting too old and miserly I know :)

Having picked up the GoW 1 & 2 collection for £20 already I'll just be looking at getting GoWIII thanks. I think this box set is alright depending on a couple of factors - first off the GoW 1 & 2 collection needs to be available separately in Europe too - if it isn't then this is crap. Ultimately special editions like this are for people who must own every little bit of info - it's not really for people who just want to play the game. Is it really any worse than what you get in the DVD business? If it's over priced then it will drop to the bargain bins soon enough.

Got a chance to try the GoW I & II collection last night. Really very nice. I'd not really played the GoW games before - beyond the first demo on the PS2 and the GoWIII demo on the PS3. There is a lot more to the games than I had originally assumed.

Graphically it stands up surprisingly well in the days of HD. Testament to the original and the emulation process. Got to wonder how much they had to alter/change to get it looking so good - if it was not much then I'd like to see more PS2 classics take the emulation and 720p route. This sort of thing was rumoured in a leaked Sega doc a while back - hopefully that turns out to be true and a select number of classics get made available.

Play wise the 60fps makes it a joy and notably more fluid and controllable than the GoWIII demo. I'd like to see that polished up to a similar standard - or at least locked to a consistent 30fps. Smooth is king in this genre. Playing has also peaked my interest in other games in the genre which I'd ignored with a "not my cuppa" label. So may eventually get round to taking a longer look at Dantes, Bayonetta etc.

I got this through from Lovefilm yesterday, played the first hour or so and to be honest I think I'm going to struggle with any more than that. Does is get better or was I just in the wrong mood for the game last night? It really didn't do anything for me at all - right from the very polished and professional start up sequence which you couldn't skip and had no real purpose other than looking good to the ridiculously overdone initial encounters it just pressed all the wrong buttons for me. It's like they got so carried away with making it look amazing (which it does) and just chucking all this barely interactive stuff in that they actually forgot to put a game in. And then when they did its all completely cack-handed because it barely explains anything, half the time you need to guess what the game is expecting you to do and then it breaks all the game logic that its applied by magically making the one right thing you need to do suddenly much more effective than it usually is. And making you hold down a button to open chest and then adding a really long animation sequence. Why? It totally destroys the pace of the game. I remember quite liking God of War 1 but things have moved on a lot since then, I think I've maybe been spoiled by the likes of Bayonetta and Darksiders.

^I bought GoW III and only played it once too. There's nothing wrong with it, but I'd just played the GoW 1 and 2 remakes so maybe I'd had my fill by then and it might be ok now.

It is a game which really belongs on the PS2, and it started off on the PS2, but they've redone it for PS3 and the world has moved on slightly. Nothing wrong with the game really, it's just nothing new (Which is fine for people who want more of the same but in HD, even though it's only 720P and not 1080P like the original remakes).

I'll give it another go once I've maxed out the Dead Rising 2 Case 0 thing.

The GoW collection remakes were 720p too. The key difference was more frame rates. GoW collection upped the originals to a nice fluid 60fps. GoWIII tries to get there but averages somewhere around 45-50 I think. They would have been better locking it to 30.
